After a lifetime spent among people who feared and distrusted mages, Danric had no notion of what to expect from Galaan and the others once they’d seen the extent of Evaraine’s power. Farhall had long been a haven for mages, but the existence of Yvane’s valley suggested the situation was not that simple.

And indeed, perhaps he should have anticipated that people everywhere were often both more and less than one might hope. There would always be those who feared what was strange and different, as evidenced by the villagers who hurried back into their homes when they saw him coming with their savior in his arms.

But there would also be those who were generous of spirit and willing to accept that there was room in the world for more than one way of doing things.

Galaan and Marthe met them at the edge of the lake, along with Leisa, whose expression was already rigid with frustration before she took in Evaraine’s limp form and closed eyes.

“What happened?” she demanded, every line of her body suggesting that she was ready to tackle Danric to the ground and take her princess away by force.

“She beat them,” he said flatly. “But it cost her. I don’t know how much. I was hoping you could tell me how to help her.”

Galaan’s posture had changed to one of wary respect as he led them back to his home. With a quiet word, he dispersed those villagers curious enough to have remained outside and directed Danric to lay Evaraine on a narrow bed.

Danric would have stayed to watch over her, but Marthe pushed him out, insisting that she and Leisa could see to whatever needs the “young lady” might have.

Galaan, meanwhile, stirred up the fire and offered Danric a mug of tea before sitting heavily in a chair and staring into the flames.

“I don’t know what she did,” he said after a few minutes of silence, “but we are in her debt. No question about it.” He threw Danric a quick, curious glance. “Any chance you lot would consider staying the winter? It’s a hard road out there, traveling between storms, hoping to make it to the next town. We would consider it an honor to see you fed and warm till spring.”

Danric couldn’t help wondering whether the offer would be rescinded if Galaan knew whom he was harboring. Still, he responded with a regretful shake of his head.

“That’s up to her, but I doubt she’ll agree to stay. She’s worried that there may be more of the creatures out there and all too few with the skills to face them.”

“Aye.” Galaan let out a heavy sigh. “Even here, mages do not always care to announce themselves. Too many are quick to shun them out of naught more than fear. And some gifts find an easier home than others. It’s easy to understand a kind old woman who can help your plants grow, but not so easy to accept, say, a child who can see your future.”

“You believe there are more mages out there than we know, but they hide it.
